5 Tips for Maintaining Fake Grass

Artificial grass is a great alternative to natural grass for many reasons. It is a low-maintenance lawn option that does not require mowing, fertilising, or watering. It looks beautiful year-round and is suitable for many different outdoor (and indoor!) areas. But just like any product, artificial grass needs to be taken care of in order to last as long as possible. Here are some tips on maintaining fake grass and helping it to last longer. 

Regular Maintenance

The most important thing you can do to extend the life of your artificial grass and ensure your garden transformation stays in great condition is to carry out regular maintenance. This includes brushing the grass blades in the same direction when they start to look flat or matted and removing debris such as leaves and sticks that may have accumulated since the last time you cleaned it. 

You should also use a hose or power washer on a low setting at least once a month to clean off any dirt and dust that may have built up over time. If you see any signs of wear and tear, it’s important to repair them immediately so they don’t get worse in the long run.

Avoid Heavy Traffic

Heavy traffic can cause wear and tear on your artificial grass over time, however, most shorter-pile artificial grass options brush up like new after experiencing heavy traffic. If there are certain areas where heavy foot traffic is unavoidable (such as near an entranceway), try spreading out rugs or mats in those areas so people can walk on them instead of directly on the artificial grass itself. This will prevent premature wear and tear due to high foot traffic in certain areas over time and will assist in maintaining fake grass for longer.

Look Out for Weeds

Whilst weeds cannot take root in artificial grass, airborne seeds can blow in the wind and lay on top of your lawn. To keep your artificial grass looking its best over time, brush these seeds off and remove the weeds. You may also consider installing an edging system around the perimeter of your turf to provide an additional barrier against weed growth, helping to enhance your low-maintenance lawn even further.

Keep it Clean

Cleaning is another important step in maintaining fake grass. Use mild detergents or special cleaners made specifically for artificial grass when cleaning away dirt and debris from spills or pet accidents. Avoid any harsh chemicals, as these can cause discoloration, wear down fibers, and damage the backing material of the turf itself.

As well as using cleaning products, make sure to vacuum the grass or use a leaf blower to ensure any dirt and debris are removed from your lawn.
